Abstract

This study investigates the impact of pension asset investments on Malaysia’s economic growth, with particular emphasis on their role in supporting fiscal and monetary sustainability. Specifically, the analysis examines how total retirement fund investments contribute to gross domestic product (GDP), while controlling for key macroeconomic determinants, including gross fixed capital formation, domestic credit to the private sector, inflation, public debt, population dynamics, and interest rates. The study utilises secondary time-series annual data spanning 25 years (2000–2024), sourced from the Department of Statistics Malaysia and relevant national institutions such as the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economy, Bank Negara Malaysia, the Employees Provident Fund, Kumpulan Wang Persaraan, and Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera, alongside international databases from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Employing regression-based static econometric techniques, the findings demonstrate that the accumulation of pension fund assets contributes negatively and significantly to economic growth. Meanwhile, gross fixed capital formation, public debt, interest rates, and domestic credit significantly influence Malaysia’s economic growth, whereas inflation and population do not exhibit statistically significant effects. These results provide robust empirical evidence that pension fund investment activity represents an important channel through which long-term institutional savings can enhance macroeconomic performance and financial stability. From a policy perspective, the study highlights the importance of adopting an integrated pension funds framework that incorporates multiple retirement institutions rather than focusing on a single fund, thereby strengthening national development strategies and capital market deepening.
