Internship diary: learning experience at Infra Focus (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Beginning my internship at INFRA FOCUS (M) SDN. BHD. was a significant milestone, marking my first real exposure to the professional world of electrical engineering. I remember feeling a mix of nerves and excitement on the first day, eager to absorb as much as I could. The team greeted me kindly and introduced me to the company's ongoing projects, particularly those involving underground power cable installations. From that point, I realized this internship would play a key role in shaping my future career.
During my time there, I was mainly involved in assisting with project management for 33kV underground cabling work. This responsibility gave me firsthand insight into how electrical projects are organized and executed at the site level. I discovered that project management extends far beyond technical aspects which it also includes supervision, scheduling, coordination, and maintaining safety and efficiency throughout operations.
One of the most engaging tasks I participated in was cable laying. This process involved setting underground cables through designated trenches and ducts. I watched how the team handled heavy cables with specialized tools to avoid damage and learned how critical it is to inspect cable routes, monitor site conditions, and align progress with the project schedule. These experiences deepened my understanding of the real-world challenges faced during underground cable installation.
I also gained valuable knowledge about cable jointing, an essential process for connecting sections of underground cable and restoring insulation integrity. I observed and assisted technicians in preparing cables, connecting conductors, applying insulation, and completing the jointing procedure using proper kits. Each step had to be precise, as the quality of the joint determines the reliability and safety of the entire system.
