Measuring the outcome of information literacy: perceptions of undergraduate students

This academic article evaluates the educational outcomes, self-assessed competencies, and perceived effectiveness of information literacy instruction by analyzing the perceptions of undergraduate students. As higher education environments increasingly demand advanced research, critical evaluation, and digital discovery skills, assessing how students perceive their own information literacy development is vital for optimizing library instruction models. To systematically examine these learning outcomes, this empirical study investigates student responses across three core analytical dimensions: (1) Self-Perceived Competency in Search Strategies and Information Retrieval, evaluating student confidence in constructing complex search strings, selecting academic databases, and refining search results; (2) Critical Evaluation and Ethical Information Use, measuring students' perceived ability to critically assess source credibility, identify bias, and apply proper citation standards to prevent plagiarism; and (3) Impact on Academic Performance and Research Self-Efficacy, assessing the degree to which information literacy sessions enhance overall academic achievement, research confidence, and lifelong learning skills. The empirical findings indicate a strong positive correlation between structured information literacy instruction and elevated student self-efficacy in executing scholarly research. Ultimately, this research offers an applied assessment framework and pedagogical blueprint for academic librarians, instructional designers, and higher education administrators seeking to refine information literacy curricula, align library instruction with student needs, and demonstrate the tangible educational impact of academic library services
