Abstract
Palm oil operators in Malaysia can be broadly categorized into large plantation companies, independent smallholders (ISH) and organized smallholders (OSH). Smallholders, individuals managing oil palm on small plots usually less than 40 hectares, are an important element of Malaysia’s palm oil landscape, not only in terms of numbers but also in land usage and contributions. Referring to the table below, smallholders cover around 26.4% of the planted area in Malaysia.
