Adaptive reuse challenges of Traditional Malay Houses in contemporary contexts

Traditional Malay houses are a vital part of Malaysia’s cultural heritage, embodying unique architectural features, craftsmanship, and socio-cultural values. However, in contemporary contexts, these heritage structures face increasing pressures from urban development, functional obsolescence, and changing lifestyles. Adaptive reuse is the process of repurposing old buildings for new functions and offers a sustainable approach to preserving their cultural significance while meeting modern needs. This study investigates the challenges associated with the adaptive reuse of traditional Malay houses in Malaysia, with a focus on a selected case study to illustrate real-world complexities. Key challenges identified include structural integrity issues, compliance with modern building regulations, the scarcity of traditional materials and skilled craftsmen, and the balanceof heritage authenticity with contemporary functionality. Through qualitative analysis of the case study and interviews with the owner, the research highlights the need for context sensitive strategies, policy support, and community engagement to ensure the successful integration of traditional Malay houses into present-day use. The findings aim to inform conservation practitioners, architects, and policymakers on best practices for sustaining Malaysia’s architectural heritage in the face of modernisation.
