UiTM nursing outreach brings joy and connection to elderly residents in Kepala Batas

This article documents the implementation and impact of the community outreach program "Nurses with Heart, Elders in Care," organized by the Penang Nursing Student Association (PeNSA) in collaboration with the Nursing Programme at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Cawangan Pulau Pinang, Bertam Campus. Held at Pusat Jagaan Damai Permai in Kepala Batas, the half-day initiative involved 38 diploma students from the Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Medical Laboratory Technology programs, guided by clinical instructors and lecturers. The success of this healthcare outreach was driven by three core components: (1) Enhancement of Student Leadership and Soft Skills, fostering critical communication, teamwork, and volunteerism through direct engagement; (2) Promotion of Geriatric Health and Wellness, achieved via light physical mobility exercises, personalized health education on self-care, and interactive social games; and (3) Provision of Emotional and Social Support, which brought companionship to the elderly residents while enriching the surroundings through a collaborative gotong-royong cleanup session. This meaningful outreach underscores UiTM’s persistent dedication to cultivating well-rounded, compassionate, and community-centered healthcare professionals capable of addressing the needs of vulnerable populations.
