Abstract
Plantation industry has been the backbone of Malaysian economy for decades and should continue to be along time to come. We should aim to maintain our leading edge in the production and export of Palm Oil in the world. Based on developments during the past decade, there is a real threat in a few years' time some plantation oil palm area may be abandoned because there are not enough workers available. Even amongst most of the foriegn workers, plantation works is not their first choice. Plantation work is very looked down by many even when the earnings are better than those in the manufacturing sector. The workers especially the school leavers are keen to work in air conditioned rooms in the town rather than working in the plantation as most of time they have to work under the hot sun.
