Abstract

Waste management facilities are often designed for functionality, isolated from the public, limiting community engagement, and fostering negative perceptions. Transparency in architecture, through glass facades, open layouts, and visible structures, enhances accessibility, visual openness, and connection between spaces and users. This study explores how architectural transparency can bridge this gap, making waste management facilities more visible, accessible, and integrated into the communities they serve. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research examines two facilities: the Kamikatsu Zero Waste Centre in Japan and the Batu Maung Waste Transfer Station in Malaysia. Data gathered from site visits and document analysis reveal that transparent design helps clarify waste processes, build public trust, and encourage greater community involvement in sustainable practices. Transparency in waste facilities is achieved through visual openness, public engagement, material honesty, environmental integration, and perceptual awareness. These strategies collectively enhance public trust, engagement, and sustainability. Future research should explore a broader range of facilities globally, assess the long-term effects of transparency strategies on public engagement, and investigate the impact of transparency beyond aesthetics, particularly in promoting sustainable behaviours.
