Abstract

English Language has now become one of the most prominent languages in the world. It has been widely used in all countries despite of its status in some of the countries. In Malaysia, English Language has been used in many functions such as for the entertainment, business, and many more even though it is the second language in Malaysia. Therefore, with such important usage, it is very important for all Malaysians especially the school children to learn the English Language. However, the question remains whether the students have the motivation to learn the second language. Therefore, this study intends to investigate the types of motivations that the secondary school students have in learning the second language. This study also aims to investigate the possible reasons behind the students’ motivation and their perceptions on their motivation. This study was conducted at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cochrane Perkasa Kuala Lumpur. 35 students were randomly chosen to participate in this study. It can be concluded that all students have motivation to learn English Language. The motivation has helped them to work hard for their future. Thus, the researcher recommends that the teachers to pay more attention on preparing teaching activities that will boost the students’ motivation in order to make them successful.
