Abstract
This professorial lecture explores the role of Islamic finance and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles in strengthening the resilience of Islamic banks amid global financial challenges. It highlights the common ground between Islamic finance and ESG, particularly their emphasis on ethical practices, fairness, transparency, social responsibility and sustainable development. The professorial lecture explains how the fundamental principles of Islamic finance, including the prohibition of excessive risk and speculation, asset-backed financing, profit-and-loss sharing, and strong liquidity and capital management, contribute to the ability of Islamic banks to withstand financial crises.
