Abstract

Industrial training, or internship, is a structured program that allows students to gain real- world experience in their field of study. It is a compulsory component for all undergraduate programs under the Faculty of Business and Management, as stated in the official Plan of Study. The goal is to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing students for the professional world. Internships expose students to actual business environments, enhance employability, and provide insight into workplace expectations. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), internships are crucial in developing career readiness competencies, such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving (NACE, 2023). This report highlights my five-month industrial training experience at PETRONAS Refinery and Petrochemical Corporation Sdn Bhd (PRPC), from 3 March 2025 to 15 August 2025. PRPC serves as the Park Developer and Manager of the Pengerang Integrated Complex (PIC) in Johor, Malaysia. It plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, secure, and efficient operation of PIC, PETRONAS’ largest downstream investment. The company also acts as a one-stop centre for investors, offering services ranging from regulatory guidance to site integration, while upholding the highest standards of Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE). This report includes a brief background of PRPC, its operational structure, and its path to becoming a leading player in the oil and gas sector. During my internship, I was placed in the Commercial Development team, which oversees contract development and agreement management for various projects. This division plays a vital role in supporting business operations through contract drafting, negotiation, and billing arrangements. I had the opportunity to be involved in price benchmarking, reviewing contract documents, and understanding the strategic elements of commercial negotiations. This hands-on experience gave me valuable exposure to real business functions and deepened my understanding of the corporate environment, particularly in the oil and gas industry. This report presents a comprehensive summary of the tasks undertaken, challenges faced, and outcomes accomplished throughout the internship, along with a SWOT analysis of PRPC and proposed recommendations for continuous improvement. Overall, the internship served as a valuable learning experience that enhanced my academic foundation and strengthened my preparedness for future professional endeavours.
