Young Lawyers Advocacy Training Course

Abstract

On 25 -27 January 2019, the Faculty of Law UiTM and Yayasan Arshad Ayub jointly organised the course on basic civil advocacy. The course was held over two days at the Sessions Court, Putrajaya. Among the objectives of the training course were: i) witness handling in examination-in-chief, ii) witness handling in cross-examination, and iii) closing submissions. The opening address for the plenary session was by YAA Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum, Chief Justice of Malaysia. The traning was conducted by prominent senior judges and lawyers such as YA Datuk Seri Panglima David Wong Dak Wah, Chief Judge Sabah and Sarawak, YA Dato’ Mary Lim, YA Datuk Wong Kian Kheong, YA Datuk Vazeer Alam Mydin Meera, Y.M Tunku Farik Tunku Ismail, Shaikh Abdul Saleem and Brendan Navin Siva. The participants were the full time lecturers and part-timers who are currently teaching at the Faculty of Law, UiTM. All participants were exposed to a simulation courtroom environment in handling examination-in-chief and cross examination. They were designated with a specific role either as counsel or witness. The course was indeed beneficial to the participants. It is also useful to the academicians as they are required to teach the students, especially on civil trial and advocacy. Lecturers of the Faculty, who completed the training course were Encik Muhammad Umar bin Abdul Razak, Dr. Faridah Hj. Hussain and Puan Mimi Sintia Binti Hj. Bajuri. Dr. Hartini Saripan, Dean of the Law Faculty of UiTM, expressed her thanks to the judiciary, especially to YAA Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Richard Malanjum, Chief Justice of Malaysia, and to Yayasan Arshad Ayub at the end of the workshop.
