Rubberised tile project: advancing sustainability through campus-based recycling

UiTM, UGC (2025) Rubberised tile project: advancing sustainability through campus-based recycling. Bulletin. UiTM Green Centre, Shah Alam.

Abstract

The rubberised tile project is a campus-based recycling initiative led by the sustainable polymer materials (SUPMA) group, in collaboration with the UiTM Perlis Green Centre and the facilities unit. It focuses on producing durable tiles using discarded plastic bottles, natural rubber, and waste synthetic rubber. These eco-friendly tiles are planned for installation along pedestrian walkways near Kolej Dahlia and Kolej Cengal, supporting the university’s efforts to reduce plastic waste, encourage recycling, and improve campus facilities. The project involves collecting used plastic bottles from recycling points around UiTM Perlis, followed by a cleaning and processing phase to prepare the materials. This practical approach not only helps manage campus waste but also benefits students and staff by providing safer, more sustainable walkways. The initiative reflects UiTM’S commitment to environmental responsibility and highlights how the creative reuse of materials can contribute to a greener, more innovative campus.
