Abstract

The term „SPeD Basket‟ refers to the baskets of books which follow: a) Basket 1 (000-099 General) b) Basket 2 (100-199 Philosophy) c) Basket 3 (200-299 Religion) d) Basket 4 (300-399 Humanities) e) Basket 5 (400-499 Language) f) Basket 6 (500-599 Pure Science) g) Basket 7 (600-699 Technology) h) Basket 8 (700-799 Art) i) Basket 9 (800-899 Literature) j) Basket 10 (900-999 General History and Geography) The purpose of this system is to educate and train the students the skill on how to use and apply the Dewey Classification System. This skill is beneficial when they pursue their studies at tertiary level. The programme also aims to reduce and ease the librarians‟ workloads in ensuring that books are arranged accordingly to the system.Based on the dialogue and discussion done with the librarians, this SPeD Basket programme is indeed very effective as it is convenient, space economical and time saving.Furthermore, according to teachers, SPeD Basket programme saves up lots of library space. This encourages more students to frequent the library as it is now more spacious. According to Cikgu Yusof and Rekacipta students, this programme helps save space. The maintenance and overhead cost are cheap and well worth the money spent. One of the librarians on duty stated that it is also convenient as these baskets are portable and have unique and comfortable grip holders. In addition, the colourful baskets make it easier for librarians and students alike to assimilate the Dewey Classification System. Borrowing and returning of books are more systematic and organized and hence, resulting in the library becoming a more conducive place to study. Thus, the system itself is a good way to support our librarians and students to discipline themselves whilst making optimum use of the library as well as inculcating good reading habits. Novelty and uniqueness: 1. Save space as they can be stacked upright vertically 2. Installation of hand grips for easy individual basket mobility.
