Abstract
Forty-six law schools from over thirty countries took part in the 34th Edition of the Concours Jean-Pictet Competition in Denpasar, Indonesia on 7 to 74 March 2020. The main objective of the competition is to take the law out of the books. Students have to display their knowledge in International Humanitarian Law {IHL) and communication skills by taking part in simulations and role-plays. They play the role of various participants in an armed conflict such as soldiers, lawyers, humanitarian officers and government officials. The organising committee invited Dr Ummi Hani to be involved in the competition as a tutor. She tutored three teams: Lloyd Law College from India; the University of Tokyo from Japan and Yaroslav Mudryi National Law University from Ukraine. She provided support and guidance to the participants on their role-play skills and the quality of their arguments. The competition is an excellent platform for the students to share their passion for IHL and views with other participants. It provides an insight into how IHL applies during an actual armed conflict and the constraints over the implementation of IHL. The competition also exposes the students to careers in the humanitarian and diplomatic missions.
