Abstract

Floor stock system is a system which enable medication to be supplied to the wards without prescription by the doctor / qualified prescriber. In this system, all but the most unusual drug items are stocked on the nursing stations in all patient care areas. Drug products which require especially strict control are often omit ted from floor stock, such drugs are sent to the nursing unit upon receipt of a prescription order for the individual patient . At Hospital Sultanah Aminah, wards will usually indents once daily. Wards personnel such as nurse will send the basket to the pharmacy department, and the pharmacy personnel will be filling the basket with item that has been indent by the nurse or wards personnel by referring to the floor stock limits. Each ward has a different floor stock limit and medications that listed on the floor stock are different from one ward to another. However, during my practical training at in-patient pharmacy in Hospital Sultanah Aminah, I found some weaknesses regarding the current system. Coincidently, pharmacy staffs in this department realised the current system is lacking somewhere. They decided to make a simple study on how this system can be improve , thus makes a working process flow nicely and smoothly. The objectives of this study was to recognise the weaknesess in current floor stock system, to study on how the efficiency of floor stock system can be improved and to evaluate the effectiveness of the improvement applied, Several wards were selected to be studied on the indents frequency. This study had some problems mostly in collection of data. So, a month with most complete data was selected. So, they and me had decided to study on data in December 2011 and January 2012. Retrospective study had been done during December 2011 while prospective study had been done in January 2011. A comparison on the data had been made between these two months and data analysis had been done. As results, indent frequency of the selected ward had been reduced. Besides, a case of missing data that happened before this study had been countered.
