Abstract
Antibiotic is known to treat or prevent infectious disease. There are many types of antibiotic group and each of them have specific mechanism of action either to kill or prevent the growth of bacteria. However, overuse of antibiotic and incorrectly prescribed antibiotics also may contribute to the promotion of resistance bacteria. This research study focuses on types of antibiotics prescribed and also the main indication of antibiotic usage either as prophylaxis or treatment of infection. The antibiotics usage pattern has been explored mainly in Orthopaedic ward. Our study was done among 280 patient admitted in Orthopaedic ward from 1st August 2016 until 31st November 2016. From our findings, most of the patients that being admitted into orthopaedic wards are prescribed with antibiotics as prophylaxis before the surgical procedure and the rest are for treating the infection. Most of antibiotic used were from Cephalosporin group. Moreover, this result of this study may be useful for improving the prescribing behaviour among prescriber to enhance the best use of antibiotic and lower the chances of antibiotic resistance.
