Abstract

Background and objective:
Government hospital's Emergency Department (ED) and Klinik Kesihatan are the most frequent visited by public as a preferred health care provider for health issue. The extensive usage of ED for green zone cases (refer Appendix I) has lead to the setting of ED pharmacy in Hospital Putrajaya (ED HPJ). Despite the existing Klinik Kesihatan Putrajaya (KKPJ) nearby the hospital, green cases in ED keep increasing statistically year by year. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the trend of drug usage in ED HPJ and KKPJ according to pharmacological properties in order to expose which cases are the most prevalent in both setting. This discovery will function to assist in stock handling and arrangement corresponding with 5's concept (refer Appendix 2) applied in all government organization.

Study design and method:
Daily ED HPJ and KKPJ drug orders were reviewed and data were collected from 1st to 31st August 2008 except for weekends and public holidays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 5p.m to 9 p.m. for extended hours. The list of drugs available in ED HPJ pharmacy was used as study sample in ED HPJ and KKPJ. By referring to the drug list, every prescription which in form of integrated computerized drug order was screened. Each time any drug from the list appears in the prescription, it was counted as one case (Appendix 3).Data were also gathered from information technology system in HPJ and KKPJ. Drug pharmacological properties classified according to Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) drug list from the ED drug list are as follows: Antibiotics; ear, nose and oropharynx (ENT) ; anaelgesics; respiratory; gastrointestinal(GI); dermatology; emergency and others.
