Abstract

Food and Drug Administration had assigned risk factors to all drugs, based on the level of risk the drug poses to the fetus. Pharmacy technicians should have adequate knowledge about the contraindicated drugs for pregnant and nursing mother as they also involve in dispensing drugs to patients. The medications error on teratogenic drugs can lead to cause death to fetus or baby and harm the mother. The general objective was to assess the knowledge of pharmacy technicians in Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah and Kota Setar Health Clinic on the effect of teratogenic drugs. Specific objectives were to (i) identify the knowledge of pharmacist technicians from different department of pharmacy, (ii) access the relationship between demographic data and working experience with knowledge score among pharmacy technicians and (iii) compare the knowledge score among pharmacy technicians between two different health institutions. This research was conducted at Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah (HSB) and Kola Setar Health Clinic from I7 September 2017 untiI 31 October 2017. The research design used for this study was descriptive research design. There were 30 of pharmacy technician have participated in this study. The data was analysed using SPSS version 20.0. The respondents need to answer 24 questions regarding the teratogenic drugs for pregnant women and nursing mother. The mean of knowledge score of respondents was 9.3 with the standard deviation 5. Besides. only 3.3% of the respondents achieved the maximum 1m1rk which is 22. Meanwhile. 16. 7% or respondents got the minimum mark which was 2. This study proved that most or the participants have forgotten about these facts and knowledge whereas it is one or the requisite of pharmacy technician. The topic regarding teratogenic drugs need to be discussed continuously in the Continuing Medical Education. The list of teratogenic drugs should be stated in the master index to aware pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
