Abstract

Our research based on drug distribution activity was done in inpatient pharmacy department in Hospital Selayang. This study focuses on the effectiveness of drug distribution system which are unit of dose and unit of use in term of workload, medication error and drug control, cost efficiency and time consuming. We obtain the result by using data collection form which was filled by the pharmacist and nurse and statistic form qf drug return and drug prescribed. Our study subjects were pharmacists, nurses and wards from 5D, CCU and ICU of inpatient department of Hospital Selayang. The three wards were given medication error form to be filled by pharmacist during checking the trolley after filling and nurse during administration medication to patient. Besides that, after filling medication of the ward's trolley they have to key in the total amount of drug prescribed in the drug prescribed form. Furthermore, during afternoon nurses will exchange trolley and take the new filled trolley to bring to the wards. While the old trolley has drugs returned from wards and the total amount of drug returned ware recorded in the drug return form. From all data collected, we analyze and key in the data into Microsoft Excel 2007 to get the result in graph form and pie chart. Expectedly, Unit of Dose shows more benefit compare to Unit of Use in terms of medication error and drug returned. Although unit of dose is better than unit of use, Hospital Selayang still have to use unit of use on Friday due to lack of staff on Saturday and Sunday.
