Abstract

In this research, we are going to study about the medication arrangement system that had being used in the out-patient pharmacy department of Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun (HRPB). Our main objectives are to assess the medication arrangement system available in HRPB and to investigate the pharmacy staffs' knowledge and understanding about medication arrangement system available and their opinion about the most suitable and appropriate medication arrangement system that have been used in the out-patient pharmacy of HRPB. We find out that there is no previous research about this topic, so we hope that the result of this study can be used as a guidance for the pharmacy staff to make some improvement on their existing medication arrangement system. We also hope other people will make a further research regarding this topic in the future. Medication arrangement system is an important aspect that the pharmacy staff should be concerned of since it can be used in all pharmacy unit even other than out-patient pharmacy. A random sampling is used and a sample of 100 respondents consisting of pharmacist, pharmacy assistants, provision-registered pharmacist and pharmacy trainee are selected. This research is a descriptive survey and the data analysis is done by descriptive statistics such as frequency and bar chart and through others statistic test such as One-way ANOV A test and Chi-square test. We were analysing the data by using SPSS version 2.0 and cross tabulation analysis is used to analyse the categorical data. From the investigation, the medication arrangement system was not fully utilised in out-patient pharmacy. However, the usage of Tall Man lettering system was the most used system in the out-patient pharmacy as it reduce the confusion of drug name in the pharmacy. Besides, more than half of the respondents were not satisfy with the current system apply in the pharmacy and 76% of respondents wanted the current system needed to be change. In conclusion, a proper medication arrangement system needed to be apply in the pharmacy setting as it help to increase the efficiency of filling process and reduce the tendency of medication error.
