Abstract

Introduction: Antibiotics were widely used in hospital nowadays. This study would carry out information of antibiotic usage and resistant pattern of common microorganisms. Excessive and inappropriate use of antibiotics contributes to the development of bacterial resistance. This study was carried out to collect relevant demographic information, antibiotic prescribing patterns and the common organisms isolated including their antibiotic sensitivity patterns.

Objective: This study aim to assess the prescribing pattern of oral antibiotics among adult patients in Hospital Teluk Intan and to compare the antibiotic usage pattern, with the antibiotic resistant pattern.

Methodology: This was a retrospective analysis study that was conducted for six months from July 2008 until December 2008 This study involved prescription at out patients pharmacy that contained oral antibiotics prescribed from ambulatories and specialists department in the hospital.
Result: 9.1 % of prescriptions were included in this study. From the demographic profile, median of age for those prescribed with antibiotic was 37 year-old. Higher percentage of antibiotic was prescribed to female patients and for ethnic category was prescribed to Malay patients. Amoxicillin was the most frequent antibiotic prescribed in the hospital during the study period. Out patient department was the most popular department that prescribed the antibiotic. The total cost was approximately 1.24% of half of hospital expenditure.

Conclusion: In conclusion, this study provides a baseline for further study on antibiotic usage. This is due to the fact that proper usage of antibiotic would reduce resistant and cost.
