Awareness of diabetes mellitus among diabetic and non-diabetic patients in Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru

The increasing trend of Diabetes Mellitus (OM) in Malaysia has become a major health problem. Hence, to minimize the increasing number of OM patients, we have to educate them to control their diabetes condition and to prevent them from further complications. This study is about Awareness of Diabetes Mellitus among Diabetic Patients and Non-Diabetic Patients in Hospital Sultanah Aminah Johor Bahru. Our study is designed accordingly where we watch for diabetes outcomes. This study is a cross-sectional convenience sampling where two hundred and nine adults ( 102 diabetic patients and 107 non­diabetic patients) are participants. At the end, only I 00 of the diabetic patients and 100 non­diabetic patients fulfilled the inclusion criteria and 9 subjects were excluded due to participants who do not understand the questions, technical problems and they were not on the spot to answer the questionnaire. For the overall result, the diabetic patients scored 67.2% while the non-diabetic patients scored 60.25%. Based on previous research (Mafauzy et al 2006), knowledge of Diabetes Mellitus among diabetic patients was higher than non-diabetic patients. Even though diabetic patients scored higher than non-diabetic patients, the score cannot reached the acceptable score which is 70%. We found that there are many factors which are related to this result such as, income, age, and lack of emphasis on explanation about Diabetes Mellitus to non-diabetic and diabetic patients respectively.
The overall concluding results showed that both sample (diabetic and non-diabetic) have low awareness on their diabetic knowledge. However, diabetic group showed better score compared to non-diabetic group.
