The prevalence of depression among diabetic patients in Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, Seremban (HTJS)

Diabetes in Malaysia nowadays is a common non-communicable disesase. It has been ages since the government has taken serious action but all the measures taken have been seriously undermined. Rate of diabetes has increased two-fold over the decades which is very alarming. Physical state of the patients is not the only thing that must be focused on, mental disturbance such as depression has to be seriously managed too. The main objectives of the study was to analyse the prevalence of depression in diabetic patients. The total subjects that have been included in the research is 230. This research used Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (HADS), Morisky 8-ltem Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS) and another questionnaire was used to collect data regarding factors that associated to depression. This research was mainly conducted at Medical Out-Patient Department (MOPD) and Diabetic Research Centre (DRC) in Hospital Tuanku Ja'afar, Seremban. This study concluded that n = 55 or 23.9% respondents is having a depression while n = 101 or 43.9% respondents is having a borderline depression. Chi-Square and Independent T-test is used and it is observable that races and concomitant disease are the key factors to depression. The study has conclude that in this study, the prevalence of depression among diabetic patients is well established.
