Study of eye diseases and prescribing pattern of ophthalmic preparation at Out Patients Pharmacy Department in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HUSM) Kubang Kerian, Kelantan

There are many type of eye diseases that are found nowadays worldwide. This study research were focused on prescribing pattern for treating eye diseases at Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Kelantan. We collected our data based on the prescription that we received from the opthalmic clinic at the outpatient pharmacy department of HUSM. The focus of this study is related to the demographic factors which are age, gender, ethnics, class of drugs, dosage form of drug and number of drug per prescription with eye diseases. Total of 579 prescription we gathered starting from month January till March and we used the SPSS version 23 to analyze our data and to interpret the result into table form and chart form. Based on the result we found that the doctor mostly prescribed type of drugs of lubricants that is total of 248 drugs in treating eye diseases, dry eyes disease was found second highest in three months record. Other than that, doctor also prescribed drug that consists of various type of class of drugs that total up to 6 classes of drug in one prescription and the data showed that 2 classes of drug recorded the highest number of drug prescribed which is 122 drugs. From this result we also can see that other demographic factors play an important role in choosing the right medicines because mostly there is an association between age, gender and ethnics with type of eye diseases and classes of drug.
