Abstract

The reasons patients return unused drug have been explored. The study focuses on patient's explanation for returning medication: being categorized as, excessive supply, expired medicines, changes in patient's circumstance or the repeat medicine policy at the surgery and patient's death. However, most of the study of drug return is more focuses on outpatients. Despite on that, my study is more focus of drug return from inward (in patients) and was undertaken to investigate the reasons wards return unused drug (injection).
In my current training hospital which is Seberang Jaya Hospital, I had been informed by the pharmacists who in charged in ward supply, that no survey regarding on the inward medication returns have been done before this. From there I choose to survey and figure out on it. This study seems to be important as to monitor the injectable inward medication returns. I also try to asses Seberang Jaya Hospital staff nurses knowledge of "drug return policy" and their procedures on it and figure out the factors that influences the returning back of medication from wards.
Ward supply Pharmacy department of Seberang Jaya Hospital is providing services to the 12 wards in the hospital. However, I narrowed my study subject only to the 6 major wards; ward 2 (paeditric), ward 3 (male orthopaedic), ward 4 (obstetrics and gynae), ward 5 (male medical), ward 7 (male surgical), and ward 11 (ICU and CCU). It has been run in Ward supply Pharmacy for 4 months. I choose injectable inward medication returns and staff nurse who monitor drug return inward as my target subject, and to obtain a data for my research, I used questionnaire and Data Collection Form. Scoring method was used to indicate knowledge of staff nurses in "drug return policy".
As my research showed that even though the level of understanding in drug return policy ,53% (figure I) and knowledge in drug return criteria,60% (figure 2) among the staff nurses is high, there are still among staff nurse who have a medium and low ranking. I stated out what had caused it. One of their problems includes lack of knowledge about the condition of medication that can be return back and their lack of responsibilities or working ethics in drug return practice. Inadequate information and inappropriate
