Abstract

Pancreatic lipase is the enzyme responsible for the digestion and absorption of triglycerides. It is one of the most widely studied methods used to determine the potential activity of natural products to inhibit the absorption of dietary fats. Decreasing the intake of energy from dietary fat by inhibiting this enzyme can be excellent strategy for preventing and treating obesity. The pancreatic lipase inhibition activity of Lawsonia inermis or famously known as henna was evaluated in vitro. The functional groups that inhibit the phytochemical properties inside the henna were being analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The experimental maximum yield of total phenol content (TPC) was 99.47 15 and 57.94 36 for both heating process and warm water extraction was obtained, respectively, at the temperature of 60 . Meanwhile, the experimental maximum yield of total flavonoids content (TFC) was 322.17 42 and 235.77 53 for both heating process and warm water extraction was obtained, respectively, at the temperature of 60 . In pancreatic lipase inhibition activity, it shows that boiling water extraction was more efficient than warm water extraction in inhibiting the pancreatic lipase activity based on the percentage of inhibition obtained. Based on results obtained, L.inermis shows a higher percentage of inhibition compared to quercetin at the same concentration, 4 mg/mL with 43.89% and 31.31% respectively. Thus, the ability of the L.inermis to condense phenolic compounds which is phenolic acid and flavonoids appears to have been well demonstrated as a pancreatic lipase inhibitor.
