Abstract

All educational institutions in Malaysia have been asked to save energy by the Malaysian Ministry of Education. Due to a lack of energy awareness and poor energy use among students, energy waste is common in Malaysian public schools. The energy performance of a school can be improved by raising appropriate energy awareness and increasing energy-use behaviour among pupils. We can only manage what we've measured, though. As a result, it is difficult for the implementer to create and give a better energy conservation programme without understanding the level of energy awareness and behaviour. This research has three objectives. Firstly is to investigate the energy awareness in suburban public school in Malaysia. Secondly is to minimize the usage of the energy consumption in suburban public school. Thirdly is to propose a solution to reduce the cost or expenditure of energy consumption in suburban public schools. Questionnaire was developed based on previous related research, and submitted for expert verification. The refined questionnaires were distributed among suburban public schools in Malaysia which is involves primary and secondary schools. The questionnaire cover three part related to the usage factor, level of energy awareness and strategy that can reduce the energy consumption. The total numbers of respondents are 65. The target respondent were student, teachers and parent. With the student, teachers level of energy awareness of the application of great strategy, the energy usage will be used in an efficiency way. Also, the results indicate that higher level of energy awareness can be associated with better energy-use behaviour. It is suggested that in future studies the research should be done by investigating the duration of energy consumption for every electrical appliances and do the comparison of energy awareness between suburban public and private school.
