Abstract

Returned medication programme have been implemented by Ministry of Health in 2010. One of the reasons behind the campaign was to reduce the cost of medicines help reduce the possibility of the prescription drugs being misuse by others. (Rahman, 2011). But, the amount of unused medications are a lot, and it will be such a waste to throw the drugs when it is still in a good condition. The objective of this study is to identify the reasons patient returned their unused medications to the outpatient pharmacy department. Our study was done in outpatient department Hospital Tuanku Jaafar, Seremban. Our study subject was the patient who came to the outpatient department of Hospital Tuanku Jaafar Seremban. Subjects of the study were chosen and were interviewed focusing on the demographic factors which are age, gender, disease and reasons of medicines return. 100 samples have been collected and the data has been analyse by using Microsoft Excel. Majority of the patients were female (52, 52.00%), within the range of 61-80 (47, 47.00%). The major reasons of medication returned was change of regimen (31.62%) followed by non-compliance (25.64%) and excess medication given (19.66%). Changing the type of medication and forgot to take medication on time are example that contribute to the unused medications. In order to reduce the amount of unused medications, overcome these problems is a must. This result can be used by pharmacist or other healthcare professionals to overcome this problem thus can reduce government budget in supplying the medicines.
