Fire safety provisions in Universities’ hostel buildings

Universities rely on essential resources like adequate facilities to function efficiently. Student accommodations are crucial, requiring measures like fire and building safety to ensure their safety. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to identify common fire safety provisions used in the universities’ hostel buildings, analyse awareness and knowledge of the residents on the common fire safety provisions used and also to recommend improvement for fire safety provisions used in the universities’ hostel buildings. Methodology serves to this research are applying questionnaire form which distribute to students who are the residents of hostels in the chosen universities. Analysis carried out after all data grouped enough. Data gained in this research is analysed through frequency statistic method and mean method. Common fire safety provisions that have been identified are fire alarms, sprinkler systems, fire extinguishers, emergency evacuation plan, emergency exit signage, smoke detectors and fire doors. Majority of the students are aware and knowledgeable in utilizing these common fire safety provisions and most of the recommendations for improvement of every type of common fire safety provisions available are agreed by the students. The research is successfully achieved its objectives of identifying the common fire safety provisions used, analysed the awareness and knowledge of the residents and as well as proposing recommendation for improvement. Data collection and analysis were utilized to support the findings presented in Chapter Four.
