Abstract

The introduction of Medication Returned Program (MRP) to the public has been focussed since the government has taking the action to impose this programme due to the health and environmental issues. This study focussed on why patients return their medications and does the MRP helps to reduce the hospital monthly cost. The study was done at Outpatient Pharmacy for Specialist Clinic of General Hospital Kuala Lumpur. The subject for this study was patients who come to the outpatient pharmacy department to return their medications to the hospital. As the General Hospital Kuala Lumpur has set a guideline, all patients who wanted to return their medications must be interviewed by the pharmacist in-charge in order to get the correct information related to the MRP which is important for hospital records. The focuses of this study were to relate patients’ reasons, whose medication they are returning and does it has any relationship in reducing the hospital cost per month. The 4 months data collection has been go through and has been keyed in into SPSS version 16.0 software and Microsoft Excel 2007 to get the results in both table and graph form. Expectedly, more than 50% of the returned medications are usable and thus saving the cost incurred by the hospital institution. I hope the information gathered from the study can be use in our healthcare industry especially for the healthcare provider in order for them to share the information’s from the result with the public and to continue the study time by time in a way to increase patient’s awareness on MRP and in the same time it can save money and the environment.
