Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) on antibiotics use among the public in Shah Alam, Selangor

The world is now threatened with the resistance towards antibiotics where people need higher dose of antibiotics to fight bacterial infections. The proper use of antibiotics is not practiced properly among the public in the urban and rural areas of Shah Alam, Selangor. Hence, this study is conducted to measure the level of knowledge as well as the attitude and practice towards antibiotics among the public in Shah Alam. This cross sectional study was conducted in the district of Shah Alam. A validated survey, adapted from a few related studies was used to collect the data and they were processed then analysed. The questionnaires were distributed to respondents selected amongst those working in government offices, private sectors office workers and patrons in malls, in order to obtain the best result. Participants were given the survey form randomly without bias. The target of this study is to relate the participants’ residential area, either rural or urban, with their knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) towards antibiotics. From the 204 forms distributed, we managed to get all of them answered and obtained results in table and graph using the SPSS system version 20. The results are not as expected where the rural areas have almost the same average attitude and practice ability towards antibiotics as urban people but both have very little knowledge on antibiotics. We hope results from this study could help in improving the public’s awareness towards antibiotics in both urban as well as rural areas.
