Level of knowledge and compliance regarding safe handling of cytotoxic drugs during drug reconstitution in Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM)

The purpose of this research is to assess the level of knowledge and awareness of staff on the safe handling techniques during the reconstitution of cytotoxic drugs. Our study was done at three different places that are Cytotoxic Drugs Reconstitution Unit, Daycare Oncology and Oncology Ward in HUKM. Our subjects are the staffs who were responsible to reconstitute cytotoxic drugs of each unit. The total of staff from these three units is 49 persons and we gave a set of questionnaire for each of them to answer. The focus of this research is to relate their demographic factors which are gender, designations, department, years of services, experiences and training with the level of knowledge and awareness of safe handling technique of cytotoxic drugs. From the 49 filled questionnaires we managed to collect, we go through all of it and key in the data into SPSS version 20.0 software to get the result in table form and also graph form. As a result most of them have knowledge and aware about the safe handling technique during reconstitution. Moreover, many of them gave suggestion for hospital to make the workshop or send them for training to improve their knowledge about it. Thus, it can help to avoid or minimize occupational exposure to cytotoxic drugs and related wastes within health care establishments.
