Survey on depression among students in UiTM Puncak Alam

Depression is a common and serious worldwide illness that is related to mental health of the sufferers. According to WHO, there are more than 350 million people from all ages suffered from depression globally. A lot of researchers reported that depression is not unusual among university students and in fact, depression has been recognized as one of the most frequent problems among them. University students are exposed to various psychosocial changes that they have to adapt along with the academic and social demands as the preparation for their future professional careers. Our aims in this study are: i) to compare the prevalence of depression among faculties in UiTM Puncak Alam, ii) to compare the prevalence of depression among junior students and senior students in UiTM Puncak Alam, and iii) to compare gender differences of depression among representative samples of faculties in UiTM Puncak Alam. The student's status of well-being was assessed by using 20 Questions CES­ D based on total score obtained. A total of 240 students participated and completed the assessment form. The results were then compared and analysed using IBM SPSS. The prevalence of depression in Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Science, and Faculty of Education was 66.32%, 65.66%, and 65.22% respectively. In Faculty of Pharmacy, the prevalence among junior students and senior students was 78% and 53.3% respectively while in Faculty of Health Science, the prevalence was 67.35% and 64% respectively
