Abstract

This study is to introduce the oregano and rosemary or in scientific name is known as Origanum and Rosmarinus species, respectively. The historical uses of Origanum were included as herbal remedy for skin bums, bruises, cuts, asthma, colds, coughs, flu and sore throat due to minty properties of the plant in addition to be used as food flavorings or seasoning. Meanwhile, the historical uses of Rosmarinus include speed healing of wounds, as intensive treatment for bad dandruff and relieve pain from indigestion and menstrual cramps. The medicinal properties of Origanum and Rosmarinus were reported as having higher antioxidant and antimicrobial properties due to the presence of phenolic compounds in both plants. From the literature review, the pharmacological characteristics of Origanum and Rosmarinus such as antioxidant and antimicrobial properties and some phytochemical compositions such as phenolic acid (rosmarinic acid), phenolic diterpenes (camosol and camosic acid) and flavonoids were mentioned. Origanum and Rosmarinus essential oils are widely studied however; little information is available regarding nonvolatile compounds such as the phenolic compounds. Thus, more information is required regarding phenolics in Origanum and Rosmarinus extracts. Therefore, the research objectives include the extraction of phenolic compounds by using methanol and the screening of these compounds via Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC). Phenolic compounds were detected on TLC when visualized using FeCh. 1H-NMR spectrum of Origanum extract presented the derivative of camosol. Finally, it is proven that Origanum and Rosmarinus extracts exhibit the presence of phenolic compounds that could contribute to the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
