Abstract

Methanol (CH₃OH) also known as a methyl alcohol is a monochrome watery liquid that have many uses for domestic and industrial application such as antifreeze, solvent and fuel. Besides that, carbon dioxide emission is a problem that contribute to greenhouse effect and gives significances of global warming due to the reduction of ozone layer that increase climate temperature. So, carbon dioxide capture by using carbon capture storage with bipressure stripper configuration can be used to produce methanol. The objective of this study is (1) to evaluate and design methanol production plant using post-combustion CO₂ capture storage with bi-pressure stripper configuration. (2) to evaluate methanol production capacity from different power plant in Malaysia using post-combustion CO₂ capture storage with bi-pressure stripper configuration. This study focused on design of methanol production in order to get high productivity of methanol by using the CO₂ capture with bipressure stripper configuration method. This approach maybe can show the optimal value of the methanol production. The large CO₂ capture storage also maybe can increase the methanol production that can give high efficiency of production. The result that is 6313 kg/hr of methanol is produced from 8710 kg/hr carbon dioxide which react 1375 kg/hr of hydrogen. The evaluation of methanol production plant capacity from different coal power plant which is obtain low, medium, high carbon emission in Malaysia is also studied to compare the plant capacity to produce methanol product. The lowest capacity which is Mukah Power Station release 1.73 x 105 kg CO₂ kg/hr produced 1.55 x 106 kg methanol per year.
