In: Proceedings of the 15th regional symposium of the Malay Archipelago Simpora xv: 2024, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Perak.
Abstract
This paper explores the use of timber as a primary interior floor finish, tracing its significance from traditional Malay houses to modern Malaysian homes. Timber, a sustainable and renewable material, has been integral to Malay architecture, providing functionality and aesthetic appeal. Local species such as kempas, keruing, and meranti were historically used, while modern designs incorporate both local and imported varieties. This study examines the cultural and environmental importance of timber flooring, highlighting its role in enhancing interior spaces, promoting sustainability, and preserving Malaysia's architectural heritage. The findings underscore timber's enduring relevance in contemporary design and built environments.
