Abstract

Lotion is a smooth liquid preparation that can act as a moisturizer to treat or prevent dry skin. A good lotion formulation should be formulated using local and natural ingredients. This will promote our local production and also it is cost effective. Palm oil is natural oil that contain vitamin E compound consist of tocopherols and tocotrienols which help to increase skin hydration. It also act as an occlusive to prevent loss of water from the skin. Roselle contain a major constituents of flavonoids and anthocyanins. Both of these compound possesses antioxidant activity and inhibit elastase action. Mango has an important constituents which is alpha-hydroxyacids (AHA) that can help to improve skin hydration. Formulations containing palm oil and olive oil were produced and physically characterized using LumiFuge (Stability), Mastersizer (Particle size), Texture analysis and pH meter. Efficacy studies were conducted using Allergy patch test, Comeometer (Capacitance), Tewameter (TEWL), Cutometer (Skin elasticity) and DinoLite® (Skin analysis). All data were analysed using IBM SPSS Statistic Data Editor to determine the significance difference between the various formulations. Based on the results obtained, the lotion containing palm oil is the ideal lotion formulation for skin hydration. This is due to the high skin hydration and lowest TEWL values as compared to the lotion containing olive oil. In addition, lotion containing palm oil also showed anti-aging effect by giving higher gross elasticity (R2) value and net elasticity (R5) value as comparison to lotion containing olive oil. When compared to commercial lotion, Johnson & Johnson® and Vaseline®, lotion containing palm oil gave better hydration and TEWL values respectively.
