Abstract
Zakat is one of the available sources of funds within the Islamic economic and financial system. Although it is obligatory for Muslims to contribute Zakat, the amount collected is relatively small compared to conventional income tax collections. One of the reasons for this disparity could be the lack of motivation among Muslims. The aim of this study is to investigate the factors affecting individual decisions in Zakat income contribution and, thereby, provide an understanding of their motivations. In this exploratory study, data will be collected using a survey questionnaire that was designed based on past studies from Islamic literature. The main dimensions examined are religious belief/obligation, social welfare, and economic factors. This paper focuses on the motivations for Zakat income payment among Muslims, particularly the employees in the Bank Rakyat Main Headquarters, Kuala Lumpur.
