Abstract

The increase in demand for health products boosts demands probiotics product. Since Lactobacillus plantarum is one of the probiotic bacteria, there is a need for large-scale production of this bacteria. Modelling and simulation (M&S) approach was made to simulate single stage chemostat fermentation using MATLAB® software for Lactobacillus plantarum. Through this simulation, specific growth rate, substrate and biomass concentration of L. plantarum was predicted. Besides, dilution rate was identified as a factor that affects single stage chemostat fermentation. In chemostat fermentation, wash-out condition is an ideal situation where all the cells are pumped out from the reactor. By varying the dilution rate, the biomass concentration was affected. In conclusion, dilution rate affects the single stage chemostat fermentation for L. plantarum production.
