Moisturising effect of QV cream based water soluble chitosan

Xerosis is a pathological condition of skin characterised by the presence of visible scaly appearance, itching and cracking of skin. It can be treated by the application of moisturisers which improve the hydration level of the skin. Chitosan (CS) has gain remarkbale attention of the scientists and researchers due to its strong biological properties, including anti-inflammatory and cosmetic properties. Thus, the present study was aimed to evaluate the cosmetic effects of water soluble chitosan by using QV-cream as vehicle base. This study was conducted on six volunteers {n=6) in which test cream (QV-cream based water soluble chitosan (WSC) cream was applied and evaluated compared with commercial QV cream as positive control. The cosmetic effect of tested formulations was investigated by evaluating hydration level, erythema intensity, transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and the sebum contents of the skin. Resulting data revealed that QV cream-based WSC cream showed higher increase in the hydration level ( 55.3,72.6,75.7,80,88,90.l) and sebum contents (0.5,134.5,140.8,134,127,104) and significant reduction in the TEWL (11.2,7.9,7.3,5.2,4.8) and erythema intensity (256.3,255,245,226.3,211.4,202.8) compared to the positive control groups. In conclusion, we anticipate that WCS got cosmetic potential and can be used to develop new cosmetic and pharmaceutcal products for the treatment of xerosis.
