Ismail Moktar, Hafiz (2015) Assessment on halalness of cardiovascular medication. [Student Project] (Unpublished)

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease is the most commonly prescribed medication. However the permissible (Halal) status of the medication used is still unknown. This study was conducted in order to assess the permissible (Halal) status of the cardiovascular medication by listing the full ingredient used to manufacture the medication and verify the source of each ingredient. The total number of medication that was assessed was 180 medications that were collected from the medication package insert or leaflets. Out of 180 medications, it was found that 7. 78% of them was permissible (Halal), 6.67% of them was impermissible (Haram), 49.44% of them was classified as doubtful (Mushbooh) and 36.11 % of them was considered as an cannot be assessed or unknown. Majority of the medication were classified as doubtful (Mushbooh) due to concept of Halal and Tayyib which means purely permissible (Halal) causing the presence of one doubtful (Mushbooh) ingredient in the formulation would make the final product to be classified as doubtful. The unknown classification is due to the unavailability of data from the package insert which prevents the assessment of the medication. Further study need to be conducted in order to search for other alternative of medications that are classified as permissible (Halal) as it would affect the treatment plan and patient compliance towards the medications. Manufacturers should give their support by clearly state the source of the ingredient that they used.
