Simulation of IP queuing disciplines using OPNET

Mohd Kamil, Rosma Adila (2007) Simulation of IP queuing disciplines using OPNET. [Student Project] (Unpublished)

Abstract

This project is intended to provide a perspective on how Queuing Disciplines can contribute to offer different degrees of quality of service (QoS) in IP networks in order to achieve acceptable levels of quality in services provided to the clients; the project starts by providing the theoretical foundations that help understand the topics that are handled in this paper, such as Service's QoS requirements, Queuing Disciplines (First In First Out Queuing, Priority Queuing, Custom Queuing and Weighted Fair Queuing), etc; Then the implementation of a network scenario is done in OPNET to be able to apply the different configurations of QoS to the routers in the network such that we can establish a comparative analysis between the scenarios and determine their strengths and weaknesses. After establishing the scenarios and obtaining the statistical outcomes from each one of them, an analysis over the results was performed to establish conclusions that helped to understand better this area and determine that one of the best approaches when aiming to provide high QoS to specific type of services is the Priority Queuing mechanism, also the Custom Queuing and Weighted Fair Queuing provided acceptable levels of performance to its clients; but more importantly and based on the experience gained with this project is the fact that the best approach to select a Routing mechanism in a network will depend mostly on the type of services that will traverse this router and how important are this services to its clients.
