Abstract
The presented thesis focuses on the recyclable waste composition at the engineering complex located at UiTM Shah Alam. To date, there is limited study conducted in UiTM on recyclable waste composition and hence, a proper data on the waste composition is required for further treatment and management of these wastes. The study is done to determine the recycle waste composition collected at UiTM engineering complex and to analyse the trend of the recycle waste composition obtained during both semester session and semester break (effect on type of recycle waste, gender and engineering faculty). Sorting of the solid wastes from the recycle bins are done before any weighing of each waste category. A sample of recyclable waste is taken from each recycle bins to the instrumental analysis laboratory for ultimate analysis. Result shows that paper has the highest composition during both semester session and semester break which is at 65% and 84% respectively followed by plastic bottle with 25%) and 13%> and aluminium cans at 10%> and 3%. Even though it is expected to have a lower population at the engineering complex during the semester break period, paper still has the highest waste composition as paper is prominent in an academic institution. Hence, the use of paper is still widely used in everyday work by the staffs and postgraduate students during the semester break period. On a side note, gender have no effect on the recycling practice of the population in the engineering complex and the results suggest that the electrical engineering (FKE) students are more aware and practice recycling compared to other students.
