Abstract

The accumulation of plastic waste becoming a budding concern. The non-biodegradable polymer takes decades to degrade which lead us to plastic accumulation. Out of tons of plastic waste accumulates only 9% is recycled, another 12% is incinerated and further 79% is still left untreated and has accumulated in landfills and surrounding environment (Geyer, Jambeck, & Law, 2017). Due to utilising plastic as food packaging is one of the contribution to the plastic accumulation, a new approach has been introduced; the development of active and intelligent good packaging based on biopolymer. The packaging material consist of biodegradable and natural source. For instance, in this studies starch, chitosan and plant extract (Rosa sp.) were combined to create packaging material that exhibit antimicrobial properties and dye based pH indicator that was utilised to monitor microbolites growth. The natural dye from rose petals was extracted. The dye containing the anthocyanin, the vital compound that act as natural acid based indicator (dye based pH indicator). Rosa extract with starch-chitosan based mixture was created using appropriate ratio. 20 mL of film aliquot was casted in petri dish to produce film. The physical parameters to be determined using standard calibrated equipment and as for biological and chemical parameters, they were observed visually. All data analyses were recorded and tabulated.
