Abstract

The first state legislative assembly of Sarawak, Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Sarawak was formed on the 8th of September 1867 in Bintulu by Raja Muda Charles Brooke which made the state legislative assembly of Sarawak the oldest state legislative assembly in Malaysia. This can be noted in the statement below asserting that:- Established by Raja Muda Charles Brooke, through a meeting held in small fishing village of Bintulu on September 8, 1867. (Council Negeri, Dewan Undangan Negeri Sarawak, 1995). The members of the first state legislative assembly comprises of a total of only 21 members which was then later increases to a total of 71 elected members as per today, 2013. The Sarawak state legislative assembly underwent a series of historical event from the administration of Brooke, then to the Japanese Invasion in the beginning of World War II, the British colonial administration and also the joining of Sarawak into Malaysia in which all such occurrence denotes a change in its constitutions, its administrative ways and the total members of the state assembly itself. This will all be described in detail in the next section of this report.
