Abstract
Parking facilities is one of the major problems that needs attention in institutions of higher learning. Failure to serve appreciable facilities results in congestion and frustration. However, there are some circumstances unavoidable in having a good terminal facilities. Other than demand, factors such as limited space, cost, landscape, noise etc. influence the overall parking design. This study attempts to see the parking characteristics of higher learning institutions. The aim is to identify the existing parking problems in campus and propose solution to rectify them. Due to limited time, manpower and money, the ( study is therefore confined only to Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM), Shah Alam. And few spots in the campus are being left out as they do not depict critical parking problems. There is a need for this study since there is dissatisfaction with the existing parking scenario. This is verified from the occurrence of illegal parking in the campus. The main reasons for this are presumed to be due to lack of parking space, long walking distances from parking areas and lack of other facilities as well. Under these circumstances, an analysis on the present parking characteristic is therefore necessary. Only then can solutions be proposed in order to cater for the parking needs in ITM Shah Alam campus.
