Abstract

Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, causes significant physical, sociopsychological, and economic impacts, reducing the quality of life for those affected. The disease affects the skin, nerves, eyes, and mucous membranes, resulting in deformities, nerve damage, and loss of sensation. Delayed or no treatment causes disability, which hinders daily activities and livelihoods. Stigma and discrimination surrounding leprosy further compound the sociopsychological burden. Misconceptions about its contagiousness lead to exclusion and mental health issues. Individuals with leprosy face financial hardships due to disability and limited job opportunities, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and hindering access to essential healthcare and education. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach with intersectoral collaboration. Financial aid, including utilizing Zakat, Waqf, and Islamic finance principles, can play a significant role in alleviating the economic burdens of leprosy-affected individuals. These instruments provide avenues for charitable giving, endowments, and microfinance initiatives that can provide financial support for those affected. Targeted education campaigns should be implemented to raise awareness about leprosy: its early treatment and the importance of eradicating stigma. Vocational training empowers individuals to support themselves economically, promote self-sustainability, and escape poverty. Promoting inclusion, education, and skill-building allows affected individuals to regain dignity and lead fulfilling lives.
