Abstract

A Pandanus tectorius "Sanderi" plant is a small tree which naturally grows widely in northern Queensland, Australia and Indonesia east through the islands of the tropical Pacific Ocean to Hawaii. The extract of the Pandanus tectorius "Sanderi" was provided by the Institute For The Study Of Herbal Remedies (lnstitut Kajian Ubat Semulajadi, IKUS), Faculty Of Pharmacy, UiTM Shah Alam. Pandanus tectorius 'Sanderi' is usually planted as a decorative plant. However, in some parts of the world, Pandanus tectorius is used in treatments for cold or flu, hepatitis, asthma, boils, and even cancer. From the literature review, the roots are used to treat hemorrhoids and eases stomach cramps. The objective of this research is to isolate and purify chemical compounds from the roots of Pandanus tectorius "Sanderi ". Methods applied. for this study includes the preparation of crude fractions, both analytical and preparative thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Seven crude fractions were obtained and from these fractions, ten compounds were able to be purified and isolated. It is suggested that upcoming research could involve the identification of these phytochemical substituents.
