Abstract
The aqueous crude root extract of Prismatomeris cf glabra was assessed for cytotoxic activity using tetrazolium compound (3-( 4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-5-(3- carboxymethoxyphenyl)-2-( 4-sulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium, inner salt; MTS) and the electron coupling reagent, phenazine methosulfate (PMS) for cellular viability. This study utilized two different types of human cancer cell lines, hepatocellular cancer, Hep G2 and leukemic cancer cell line, K562 cells, and the normal hepatocyte cell line, WRL 68. The results showed that the root extract of Prismatomeris cf glabra did not exhibit any cytotoxicity against all cell lines under study, with ICso value of 482.8 µg/ml for WRL 68, ICso value of 991.5 µg/ml for Hep G2 cell lines and ICso value of 2110.7 µg/ml for K562 cells after 24h incubation. These IC50 values were much larger the standard criterion established by the American National Cancer Institute (NCI). However, further experiments need to be conducted in order to confirm the results obtained in this preliminary study.
